Sunday 3x3 League has two divisions, based on player experience and skill level.

All divisions play at the same time, and games do not cross over. Both divisions focus on fun and community-building, with Division 1 making space for friendly competition. League organizers reserve the right to move players between divisions if they feel that they are not supporting the spirit of the division.

Division 1Division 2
Playing LevelFor people with high school varsity or higher (or equivalent) playing experience. For people who are new to basketball and still learning the fundamentals, or players wanting a slower game for other reasons.
CultureFaster games with more physicality.

Expect players to generally have more strength and athletic capacity in Division 1.
Slower games with less physicality.

Basketball rules permit for controlled physical contact, and this will still be present.
Season-End EventPlayoffs (seeded based on season standings; every team participates)Existing teams will be shuffled and mixed into new teams for one night only. It is a fun way to play with new people and connect across the league.
Officiating/RefereesAt least 1 referee at each game.At least 2 referees at each game.

Having an additional referee means that they will be able to see more angles of the game, which is important for player safety (as many Division 2 players are still learning fundamental basketball skills and positioning).

When appropriate, referees are also directed to assist Division 2 players in learning the difference between legal and illegal contact, as well as to familiarize them with common violations.

PointsShots taken from behind the arc (“3-point line”) are worth 2 points.
Shots from inside the arc are worth 1 point.

FIBA Rule Reference: 16.2.1
All shots are worth 1 point.
Free ThrowsThe last free throw shot is live and Official FIBA 3X3 rules apply; players may line up around the restricted zone/key.

Fouling on a shot taken outside the arc (3-point line) results in 2 free throws worth 1 point each. If a shot taken outside the arc is successful despite a foul occurring, only 1 free throw is taken.

FIBA Rule Reference: 43.2

All free throw shots are ‘dead’ (no live rebounding), and the team that shot the free throw keeps possession and checks the ball at the top of the 3 point line.

In the event of both a made basket and a made free throw, the following check-ball goes to the defensive team.
Change of Possession (guidance on defence)After a made basket, defense cannot play the ball when the offensive player is inside the no-charge semi-circle.
In all other situations, defense can challenge the ball and prevent the ball from clearing outside the arc. This includes intercepting a clearing pass.

FIBA Rule Reference: 30
After a made basket or any other change of possession in which the ball stays live (i.e. fouls and violations excluded), defensive players cannot challenge the clearing of the ball by the new offensive team.  There cannot be interceptions of a clearing pass.

The new offensive players clearing the ball cannot commit a violation, such as carrying, travelling or double dribbling.
