summer outdoor hoops

Like all IHBS programs, this program is subject to our Gender Inclusion Policy and our Code of Conduct.
All participants in IHBS programs are required to sign a waiver for insurance purposes.

This program is very important to us because it's the lowest-barrier program we offer. In 2024, we had so many people walk by and remark to us that they had never seen so many women and queer folks playing at this court, and we had walk-bys join our games or stop to watch. It is a centrally accessible, highly visible, and inexpensive program. Many players can easily bike, bus or walk to the courts, and spectators sitting in the shade in the bleachers pump music for the players. It's a fun time for all!

All abilities are welcome, from beginner to experienced. Come play, come watch, come cheer!

the history of SUMMER OUTDOOR HOOPS

In 2024, a member of our community became the first ever to rent the outdoor basketball courts at Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre. This outdoor court is one of the best in the city, and as a result it's usually quite busy and is often solely used by cis men. As such, it can be intimidating! By connecting with municipal government last spring and securing a private rental, they were able to designate space for women and genderqueer folks to shoot outdoor hoops on alternate Sunday evenings .  This program was so successful, and the feedback so positive, that we knew we had to try again in 2025 - but make it weekly!
