QUEER COMMUNITY
Island Hoops Basketball Society is proud of its reputation as a welcoming place for 2SLGBTQIA+ people. As you can see in our Gender Inclusion Policy, we invite genderqueer and trans folks of all genders to join us, and encourage gender-neutral language and proactive pronoun disclosure in our programs.
IHBS will occasionally host events specifically for queer-identified individuals. In the past, we have arranged travel exhibition/friendly games with players in the Queer Van Hoops league on the mainland, as well as hosting the inaugural Queer Hoops Jamboree on November 9-10, 2024 (photos above). We look forward to hosting the 2nd Annual Queer Hoops Jamboree in Fall 2025!

Are you a trans or non-binary person nervous about coming out for the first time?
There are many trans folks who attend our programs regularly, and genderqueer people in leadership roles in IHBS. If you are worried you will be the 'first one', please know that you are entering a community that is already comfortable with and actively welcoming of genderqueer people, and that the leadership actively upholds this culture.
